R.Power lands $139M in Polish state grants for utility-scale BESS push, plus solar PV financing win
Polish-headquartered independent power producer R.Power has secured PLN 499.1 million (USD 139 million) in grant agreements with the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) — Poland’s National Operator of the Modernisation Fund — to develop a portfolio of priority battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
The grants come as Poland’s state-backed storage support programme gathers pace. As reported by ESS News in January, utility Tauron Group secured PLN 538 million (USD 150 million) from the same fund for 11 BESS facilities — part of a broader national programme targeting 172 energy storage facilities and nearly 3.9 GW of capacity by 2028.
The projects are backed under the program “Electricity storage facilities and related infrastructure to improve the stability of the Polish power grid,” which will support 172 energy storage facilities across Poland by 2028. R.Power’s award shows evidence that independent developers, not just utilities and incumbents, are afforded access to the scheme.
The Polish company did not disclose the specific projects covered by the grants or provide details on their combined capacity or duration. R.Power said only that the funding will be used to “implement priority BESS projects” in Poland.
Chief Investment Officer Michał Swół said the company’s debt market track record was central to its expansion strategy: “R.Power has built a demonstrable track record in the debt markets, earning the backing of multiple respected banks and institutions across Europe. With one of Europe’s largest investor-ready pipelines of utility-scale storage and renewables projects, we expect to be even more active in the project financing arena in 2026.”
The latest wins are part of a strong 12-month period for R.Power. The company R.Power won capacity market contracts for approximately 4 GWh of BESS in Poland’s December auction, as ESS News reported at the time, with the scale of its domestic storage ambitions on display.
On the solar side, the company said it separately closed PLN 181 million (USD 50.5 million) in project financing with Bank Millennium for a 70.5 MWp PV portfolio in Poland. The portfolio includes nine sites, including both operational projects and further sites to be built and commissioned by the end of 2026. The projects’ revenues are supported by a mix of CfDs and a 470 GWh power purchase agreement.
It’s the latest in deals by the company across European markets over the past twelve months, which include signing contracts to secure long-term revenues for over 1.5GW of storage and generation capacity across Poland, Romania, Germany and Italy.
Also announced this month, Slovenia-based GEN-I was chosen to optimize the operation of R.Power’s 127 MW/254 MWh Scornicești BESS in Romania, a project in which it owns 50% and has received credit approval for a €45 million debt package from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
