“It’s a miracle we have any storage projects in Germany at all”
Interview: Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) recently published an FAQ on grid connections for large-scale battery storage. It says that big battery systems require two separate procedures — one for charging (grid draw) and one for discharging (grid feed-in). Attorney Britta Wißmann from Watson Farley & Williams explains what this means for ongoing projects and existing grid connection approvals.
German network operators approve grid connection of 46 GWh of storage at medium voltage level
Last year, German network operators received 9,710 connection requests for battery storage systems planned for commissioning at the medium-voltage level. These requests correspond to a total of 400 GW/661 GWh. At the transmission network level, large-scale battery storage projects with a combined capacity of 51 GW have already been approved for development in the coming years.

Sonnen launches trade-in program for old solar battery storage systems regardless of condition or manufacturer
The initiative by the Allgäu-based company targets owners of photovoltaic storage systems installed before the end of 2020. The value of the trade-in bonus depends on the capacity of the new Sonnen battery. Sonnen describes the campaign as a “targeted growth initiative in a new market segment.”
RWE develops 700 MWh battery at former nuclear power plant site in Germany
The energy company plans to build a large 400 MW battery energy storage system near the border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany, along with a new solar park scheduled for construction next year. A gas-fired power plant is also planned for the area.
