Brazil opens public consultation on 2026 capacity auction for battery storage
Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has opened a public consultation for its 2026 storage capacity auction, which will contract systems of at least 30 MW for four-hour daily discharge and ten-year terms. The move targets large-scale battery projects, with 18 GW awaiting registration, and aims to define storage’s role in Brazil’s power market.
Batteries make strong contribution in Belgium’s latest capacity market auctions
As in last year’s auctions, battery storage accounted for nearly all of the new-build capacity selected in the three 2025 capacity market auctions. Across all procurements to date, 1.6 GW of new-build battery capacity has been awarded capacity payments by the winter of 2029-2030.
Brazil eyes April 2026 for first battery storage auction
A 20-day public consultation is anticipated to open in November to define the guidelines for the auction, which aims to contract 2 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The initiative could unlock around R$10 billion ($1.85 billion) in investments.

TBEA expects 3 GWh demand for storage projects in Brazil’s 2025 capacity auction
The Chinese electrical equipment company estimates battery market potential of 5 GWh through 2027, worth BRL $7.5 billion ($1.26 billion). TBEA sales manager Daniel Lyrio tells pv magazine which variables can make projects competitive.
BESS are becoming more attractive
As battery energy storage system costs plunge, energy price volatility is shortening payback times for storage solutions. This shift, driven by a surge in intermittently generating renewables, and ongoing innovations in battery manufacturing, marks a pivotal moment for energy markets worldwide.
Belgian capacity auctions catalyze 1.1 GW of battery storage
Similar to last year, battery energy storage systems (BESS) made up almost all new-build capacity selected in recent Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auctions in Belgium. Simon De Clercq, senior research associate at Aurora Energy Research, tells ESS News that there is even more room for BESS players to participate in the procurement exercises.
