‘EU aim of 90% European batteries by 2030 is way off’
European battery cell demand could hit 1 TWh per year by 2030 so domestic manufacturing capacity is vital to avoid dependence on Asia. Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) says the European Union's 90% local battery target will be missed in half of its modeled scenarios.
Greece launches 4.7 GW utility-scale battery storage program
Following a brief consultation in late February, the Greek government has unveiled a new battery storage program targeting 4.7 GW of utility-scale, standalone projects which will be given a priority connection and operated on a merchant basis without subsidy support. The decision detailing the new program is the last policy made by the energy ministry before a cabinet reshuffle initiated last week.

Spain preps grants for energy storage and grid demand management
A consultation exercise has been opened into a plan to distribute European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) cash into large-scale energy storage and grid flexibility sites and into customer-side electricity demand management technology.
China scraps energy storage mandate for renewable energy plants
In a major policy shift towards electricity market liberalization, China has introduced contract for difference (CfD) auctions for renewable energy plants and removed the energy storage mandate, which has driven up to 75% of the nation's demand to date. S&P Global expects the move to reverberate throughout the global battery energy storage supply chain, further driving down prices that are already at historically low levels.

Mexico defines role of energy storage in National Electric System with 8.5 GW in the pipeline
The administrative provisions regulating the integration of EES into the National Electric System are in effect as of Monday. The incorporation of 8,412 MW of energy storage systems is planned for the 2024-2038 fiscal year.
UK T-4 auction paves the way to nearly 7 GW of new BESS capacity by 2028
Out of the 6.9 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) prequalified, which translates into 1.9 GW derated capacity, around 1.8 GW of derated BESS secured 15-year contracts in the UK's T-4 auction. This is nearly two time more than the volume procured last year. Only a week earlier, a record for BESS procurement was also set in the T-1 procurement.
UK regulator reveals criteria of LDES cap-and-floor scheme
Long duration energy storage (LDES) support scheme will have eight-hour minimum discharge. Stream 1 applications will open to well-established technologies, such as lithium-ion battery technology, with at least 100 MW capacity, with stream 2 technologies including flow batteries, compressed air, and liquid air.
