Jindal India targets 5 GWh of battery storage cell capacity by 2027
The Jindal India Renewable Energy (JIRE) division of manufacturer BC Jindal Group, has announced a foray into battery energy storage systems (BESS). The company plans to build a lithium ferro phosphate battery pack assembly line with 1 GWh of annual production capacity by 2025 and wants 5 GWh of battery cell manufacturing capacity by 2027.
JIRE said it will enter a technology collaboration with a world-class technology provider to achieve the highest quality standards.
BESS help to stabilize the grid as the proportion of India’s energy generation fleet based on renewables rises. BESS absorb surplus solar energy generated during sunny days and release the stored electricity into the grid when required, ensuring power supply during peak periods and fulfilling round-the-clock supply demand. The Indian BESS market is expected to grow at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 11.41% through 2032, underscoring the significant opportunities the sector presents.
Punit Gupta, director of JIRE, said the company “is proud to step in and meet the growing demand for India’s energy storage solutions. By investing in battery energy storage systems, we are expanding our portfolio as well as contributing to grid stability and deeper integration of renewable [energy] sources.”
The manufacturer’s energy storage announcement comes as its renewables division aims to develop 5 GW of firm, dispatchable solar, wind, and mixed power generation capacity. JIRE intends to also begin manufacturing PV cells and modules.
JIRE is part of the $2.5 billion BC Jindal Group. Originally a steel pipe and fittings manufacturer, the business has grown into one of India’s leading conglomerates and has a significant presence in the power sector. Established in 1952, the group has a diverse workforce of more than 10,000 people across India, Europe, and the United States. Key business areas include flexible packaging films, energy generation, and downstream steel products.
