Energy investment and construction platform Return and renewable energy project developer Benbros have announced the creation of a joint venture that aims to develop more than 500 MW of standalone storage projects in Spain.

The agreement includes a 210 MW portfolio with grid access and connection permits spread across ten projects located across the country, the companies said. Significant progress has been made in the permitting process for this portfolio, and construction of first projects is expected to begin in 2025.

Return partner Steve Sceery said: “This collaboration combines our experience in Northern Europe, where we have 70 MW of storage in operation since 2021 and now have more than 16 GW in various stages of development, with Benbros’ strong presence and execution capability in the Spanish market.”

The agreement, formalised in August 2024, “bolsters Return’s expansion in Spain – where it already operates through its subsidiaries Ekhi and CargaTuCoche – and strengthens the platform of storage projects it is developing in various European countries,” the announcement said.
