Shenzhen-based Sunwoda has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Gryphon Energy at All Energy Australia 2024. The two companies will jointly develop a 1.6 GWh battery energy storage project in Queensland, which is expected to be connected to the grid by 2026.

The project will feature Sunwoda’s proprietary NoahX 5MWh liquid-cooled energy storage system, featuring self-developed 314Ah battery cells. The system will integrate reverse DC coupling technology to provide customized energy storage solution, in addition to efficient grid support and operations.

In August, Sunwoda Energy connected a 5MW/11MWh project to the grid in New South Wales.

Australia is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most attractive energy storage markets. According to a recent report from Rystad Energy, an independent research and business intelligence company focuses on energy, Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) is the most volatile in the world, with daily price fluctuations greater than any of the 39 major global power markets.

This volatility underscores the urgent need for energy storage to stabilize supply. By 2050, Australia is projected to require 46GW/640GWh of storage capacity, as predicted by Rystad Energy in its report.

The Australian government is also pushing forward with its first National Battery Strategy, which includes significant financial investments to strengthen the country’s energy storage industry. The federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year (July 2024 to June 2025) allocates AUD 523.2 million ($349 million) to the “Battery Breakthrough Initiative” to boost battery manufacturing, along with AUD 20.3 million ($13.5 million) for advanced battery research and AUD 1.7 billion ($1.13 billion) for the “Future Made in Australia” innovation fund, which supports clean energy manufacturing, including battery production.

Sunwoda Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sunwoda Electronic Co., Ltd., focuses on network energy, home energy storage, grid energy storage, and smart energy solutions. Established in 1997 in Shenzhen, Sunwoda is a global leader in lithium-ion battery technology.
