FRV and AMP Tank use Sungrow batteries for Finnish energy storage project

26 PowerTitan batteries from Sungrow will be part of a 60 MWh BESS in Finland. The project could be expanded to 200 MWh with a second phase.

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Saudi Arabia’s Jameel Energy, has announced a joint-venture (JV) with AMP Tank Finland Oy, a developer of energy storage systems in the Nordic and Baltic regions.

The JV’s first, 60 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) is under construction in Simo, Finland, and will be situated above the Baltic Sea, just over 100 km below the Arctic Circle.

The first phase of the project began construction in May 2024 and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025. Located near Fingrid’s Simojoki substation, in Lapland, the site will initially house 26 lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) Sungrow PowerTitan batteries with a total storage capacity of 60 MWh. The project covers 0.4 hectares and will play a vital role in stabilizing Finland’s growing renewable energy grid.

The JV said the BESS will be equipped with an advanced optimization system to ensure efficient operation and maximize energy production. A potential second phase could expand the site’s capacity to 200 MWh.

Finland will be the third country in which FRV will have have a grid-scale BESS, after the United Kingdom and Australia.  The company announced, at the presentation of its strategic plan in 2019, that it planned to develop energy storage projects worldwide

In 2021, FRV, Harmony Energy, and Tesla launched the largest storage project in the United Kingdom, where FRV is also developing the Holes Bay battery project. In 2023, the company will open an office in the United Kingdom to deploy up to 5 GW of storage in the country.
