The education secretariat of the government of the Mexican state of Nuevo León and the Mexican operation of Spanish utility Iberdrola have announced the latter’s Luces de Esperanza social program, to install batteries and solar panels in off-grid, rural education institutions, has arrived in Nuevo León.

The MXN 7 million ($342,000) first project of the program in Nuevo León has taken place in the José Eleuterio Kindergarten, in the Las Diligencias community in the municipality of Monterrey. Schools in the municipalities of China and Galeana will also be equipped in phase one of the Nuevo León initiative.

Organizers of the program said Luces de Esperanza will benefit 187 students and teachers per year in Nuevo León, “with an accumulated supply of green energy in these educational centers, of 935 people in the first five years.”

Iberdrola México launched Luces de Esperanza in 2019 and off-grid schools have received equipment in the states of San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, and Puebla.

The Spanish utility said more than MXN 50 million has been invested to install equipment for more than 8,000 people in homes and community spaces.
