Double planning success for Boralex in the UK

Boralex Inc. (“Boralex” or the “Company”) (TSX: BLX) is pleased to have achieved planning consent for two projects at the end of 2024. Approval was granted for both the up to 49.9MW Loch Toftingall Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development in Caithness from The Highland Council and the three-turbine, 149.9m-to-tip Dragon LNG wind farm project in Pembrokeshire from the Welsh Government.

Esbjörn Wilmar, Country Director of Boralex in the United Kingdom said: “We are delighted that the hard work and dedication of our team has been rewarded with the positive results we have achieved recently. These projects will contribute to Boralex’s aim of delivering renewable energy in the UK. Our portfolio of renewable energy projects is progressing well through the various stages of development and we are keen to expand it further, by development from inception as well as project acquisition from third parties. We are moving forward with delivering one of Boralex’s strategic objectives, to grow its presence in the UK and develop the UK as a core market for the company.”

Loch Toftingall is Boralex’s first consented BESS project in the UK, having already gained development, construction and operation experience of battery storage projects in France and Canada.

Acting as project consultants, Boralex delivered consent for three wind turbines at Dragon LNG’s Renewable Energy Park which adjoins their LNG Terminal in Waterston, Wales. The Dragon LNG Terminal has the capacity to supply up to 10% of the UK’s gas requirements and is a high energy user. The addition of these wind turbines to Dragon’s existing solar farm will increase on-site renewable energy generation to 47% of their annual electricity consumption, and represents a key step in their decarbonisation plans.
