Sonnen has announced prequalification of its residential-solar-battery virtual power plant (VPP) for use providing grid primary control (PC) power for a third German electricity transmission system operator (TSO).

The aggregated system of home batteries constructed by Sonnen that was approved for PC by TSO Tennet in 2018, and by Amprion in 2021, has now been prequalified by Transnet BW.

The latest landmark was announced by Allgäu-based Sonnen on Dec. 12, 2024. “The successfully completed tests tested the prescribed minimum storage capacity of 1 MW, which corresponds to several hundred sonnenBatteries,” said the company. Sonnen is responsible for networking the photovoltaic home storage systems. Marketing and activating the control reserve is carried out via Next Kraftwerke.

Sonnen has around 150 MWh of installed energy storage capacity across Transnet BW’s grid and battery owners who participate in the Transnet network will receive payments from Sonnen.

The home battery company claims to be the only supplier providing daily PC in Germany from thousands of networked home solar batteries. Sonnen also markets its VPP capacities on other markets.
