Dubai-based AMEA Power is developing a 300 MWh BESS alongside its operating 500 MW Abydos PV power plant in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate. When first unveiled in September 2024, the project was described as the first to incorporate a utility-scale BESS in Egypt.

In December 2024, China’s vertically integrated solar PV and BESS manufacturer Trinasolar said it will supply its 5 MWh Elementa 2 systems featuring its in-house lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells to the project. This week, China’s Sineng Electric announced its 5 MW central power conversion system (PCS) MV turnkey stations (EH-5000-HA-UD/33) will be installed at the Abydos BESS facility.

AMEA Power has partnered with Energy China ZTPC to carry out the construction works on the BESS plant and signed a power purchase agreement for the Abydos project with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.

The Dubai developer is working in parallel on a new 1 GW solar PV power plant with a 600 MWh BESS in the Benban area, Egypt’s Aswan Governorate. Amea Power said the Benban site will be the largest solar-plus-BESS project in Africa. The company is investing $800 million across Benban and Abydos projects.

Earlier in January, Amea Power announced it had been awarded 300 MWh across two standalone utility-scale BESS projects in the second bid window of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme.
