French renewable energy company Qair has announced two energy storage projects in Poland, which it described as an important step in its strategic growth in the European storage market.

Located in Kowala and Radkowice, these projects have a combined power output exceeding 200 MW and an energy capacity of more than 800 MWh.

Both projects will be backed by long-term agreements secured under the latest capacity market auction held by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. (PSE), the nation’s transmission grid operator. The contracts will cover 17 years of capacity payment obligation – the maximum possible tenor in the Polish capacity market mechanism and operate as reserve capacity for the Polish grid in periods when the minimum system capacity is not guaranteed.

As announced in December 2024, the much anticipated capacity market auction for 2029 ended in the seventh round with a price of PLN 264.90/kW/year ($65/kW/year). Such a clearing price rendered gas projects uneconomical and left significant room for battery storage systems to secure contracts, catalyzing gigawatts of projects.

Some of the previously announced winners include Columbus Energy, Axpo, Hynfra Energy Storage, OX2, FRV, R-Power, PGE and others.

For Qair, this achievement is a important step towards creating “a diversified and robust storage network across Europe”, spanning ten countries, including Poland, Germany, France, Spain, the UK, Italy, Romania, Montenegro, Iceland, and Greece

Currently, Qair’s storage development portfolio includes nearly 8 GW of project which will be capable of up to 20 GWh of energy storage.
