Enspired, Volytica work battery aging into energy storage trading algorithm

What does it actually cost to completely discharge a large grid-scale energy storage unit? Are the costs proportionate to the revenue generated from the electricity sold? Two companies are aiming to answer those crucial questions.

Vienna-based Enspired markets the flexibility offered by utility-scale batteries via an automated trading platform. The energy trading revenue optimization platform has worked with German battery diagnostic company Volytica to develop an algorithm which considers the health status of a battery when optimizing trading of the energy storage services.

Enspired’s automated platform trades the services of storage systems on all markets simultaneously. Across the day-ahead, intraday, and ancillary services and control reserve markets, there are 570 trading positions for electricity products every day, some of which can be traded many times. Optimizing battery services involves entering the trading positions with the highest returns and those positions can be bought and sold tens of thousands of times per day, something which requires an algorithm.

The algorithm calculates opportunity costs: the cost of participating in one market, such as secondary reserve, and not being able to participate in another, such as the continuous intraday, at the same time.

Battery operation is limited by warranty conditions which determine how many cycles a storage unit may run through daily, how deeply it can be discharged, and how quickly – at what C-rate – a unit should be charged.

The fact batteries also degrade with age injects another factor to consider when evaluating opportunity cost, with algorithms able to make assumptions of varying complexity based on that factor.

Enspired has worked Volytica’s Battery Health Insights analysis tool into its algorithm.

“Data and technology make a big difference in the monetization of stationary [energy] storage,” said Jürgen Mayerhofer, CEO of Enspired. “Every day, we perform 8,000 to 10,000 virtual optimization runs to evaluate different yield scenarios.” The integration of real-time data and degradation information makes it possible to fully utilize battery capacity within warranty conditions while identifying best usage profiles that ensure battery longevity.

Enspired’s software solution continuously diagnoses battery health and makes assumptions about possible aging. That not only ensures the unit operates within warranty conditions but the value of the asset itself can be included in overall optimization of the trading strategy.
