Gepsenix plans battery production in Germany

With a production line due by August 2025, Gepsenix will also move its headquarters from Düsseldorf to Hilden at some point.

Gepsenix Energy SE has acquired a production facility in Hilden, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The site will be converted for the industrial production of battery storage containers, modules, and cooling systems by August 2025, the company said.

As part of the move, Gepsenix’ headquarters will move from Düsseldorf to Hilden at some point as the company has acquired office space for administrative staff, architects, and engineers at the production site.

The move will bring an ability to expand the company and produce “Made in Germany” battery energy storage systems (BESS), Gepsenix said.

The battery business is building a pilot, 8 MW/16 MWh BESS in Schneeberg, Saxony. That system, due online in March 2025, is in a mixed-use area near residential, commercial, and industrial areas and the special safety technology required for the BESS will set a “precedent for the feasibility” of batteries in such locations, according to Gepsenix.

With Schneeberg having around 14,300 inhabitants, Gepsenix’ BESS will be able to supply two hours of electricity for more than 17,000 four-person households. The battery has a “black-start” capability in case of grid outages.

Gepsenix was founded in 2021 and initially focused on the development, construction, and commissioning of BESS and photovoltaic systems.

The company says its lithium ferro-phosphate battery cells come from China and its container and security systems are manufactured in Hilden. The bunker-like nature of its battery systems offer “enormous potential in possible locations, combined with greater economic efficiency of the battery [energy] storage facilities,” Gepsenix said.

The company wants to have developed 5 GW of BESS by 2030.
