Italian commune of Latiano has plans for 690 MW of batteries

Italy’s Mase has authorized construction of a seventh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Latiano commune of the city of Brindisi.
Trentino-based developer Heliopolis said it expects its “Bear03” 100 MW BESS to take 22 months to construct.
Bear03 follows two previous 100 MW Heliopolis projects planned in the Pugliese commune. Authorization for those facilities was issued in November.
The developer has also received environmental approval for a planned 56.5 MW agrovoltaic plant in Latiano.
Latiano commune is the focus of at least 690 MW of planned BESS, including sites under development by Gamma Gemini.
Mase has also approved a new 380/150/36 kV electrical transformation station in Latiano and 380 kV connections to the Brindisi/Taranto Nord 2 electricity transmission line. Italian grid operator Terna gave technical approval for the infrastructure in the second quarter of 2024.
Gamma Gemini received authorization for a 100 MW BESS in Latiano in September 2024, followed by approvals for second and third 100 MW projects, and a fourth, 90 MW site.
