Spain proposes Andalusia get almost half of EU’s €700 million energy storage aid package

Spain’s MITECO has published, for public consultation, draft details of a planned €700 million aid scheme for energy storage.

The program proposes eligible large-scale storage projects could bank up to 85% of their finance from European Union funds.

MITECO has published its proposed regulation and an associated resolution from its Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy and the plan is open for consultation until April 8.

The ministry is proposing a €308 million budget for hybridized energy storage and clean energy generation sites; around €179 million for standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS); €112 million for thermal energy storage projects, which use various materials to store excess thermal heat and cold; and €100 million for pumped hydro energy storage.

Under the draft aid scheme, “less developed” Andalusia would be allocated €130 million for hybrid sites, €70 million for standalone BESS, €61.9 million for thermal energy storage, and €50 million for pumped hydro.

“Region in transition” Galicia would receive €25 million for pumped hydro, €22 million for each of standalone BESS and hybrid sites, and €17.9 million for thermal energy storage.

Castilla-La Mancha would be allocated €65 million for hybrid projects, €10 million for standalone BESS, and €5.5 million for thermal storage, and Extremadura would get €40 million for hybrid facilities, €10 million for standalone BESS, €9 million for pumped hydro, and €1.9 million for thermal storage.

The balance of the EU-sourced funding would be allocated among Spain’s autonomous communities with Valencia receiving €38 million, Castile and Leon €32 million, the Canary Islands €22.6 million, Catalonia €19.6 million, Madrid €10.3 million, Murcia €10.2 million, Asturias €9.7 million, the Balearic Islands €9.4 million, Cantabria €1.87 million, Aragon €1.84 million, La Rioja €1.4 million, Melilla €615,000, Ceuta €483,000, the Basque Country €394,000, and Navarre €314,000.
