Red Eléctrica to break ground on Balearic island grid booster

Spanish grid operator REE this week plans to start installing batteries at the 66 kV Sant Antoni substation linking the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. The work is set to be complete before July next year.
The €76 million battery project will strengthen the islands’ grid, specifically the link between Mallorca and Eivissa, on Ibiza.
Two 45 MW/33.75 MWh batteries will comprise the largest storage as transmission asset (SATA) in the southern European Union, according to REE. A similar project is underway in Es Mercadal, on the Balearic island of Menorca.
REE said the batteries were designed after consultation with the Government of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza Council, Sant Antoni Town Hall, and nearby residents, and include landscaping measures.
The space needed for civil works has been halved, from an original proposal, by a 12% reduction in the number of battery modules installed, with the modules themselves also being smaller that initially planned. The site will be screened by vegetation and the modules will sit on two levels, with the largest elements on the lower level, reducing visual impact.
A partnership with nonprofit IbizaPreservation has seen Pitiusan lizards (Podarcis pityusensis) moved to a temporary shelter as part of a planned conservation program in Sant Antoni de Portmany.
