BW ESS, Ibersun to develop 2.2 GW of battery storage in Spain

As Spain races to meet one of Europe’s most ambitious energy storage targets while its grid remains under scrutiny following the April 28th outage, global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS has made its entry into the market, partnering with local developer Ibersun on a significant 2.2 GW portfolio of battery projects.
The country has strong solar and wind generation in place, but faces a persistent hurdle in its limited energy interconnections. Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) has mandated 22.5 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, a major step-up in commitments from current storage levels: in April 2025, Spain’s installed BESS capacity was only 60 MW.
The joint venture, targets greenfield four-hour duration assets, with the companies saying they’ll progress an initial 2.2 GW pipeline of eight projects across Spain, without indicating locations or where larger or smaller projects may be targeted. The projects will be owned equally by BW ESS and Ibersun, and the partners said they expect each project to achieve Ready-to-Build status within two years.
The companies stated they “anticipate pursuing a diverse range of revenue generation strategies” for the assets.
For BW ESS, a firm with a growing global portfolio across the UK, Australia, and other parts of Europe, the move into Spain is a calculated one. “We have a common objective to improve Spain’s grid resilience and support the market’s ambitious energy storage growth targets,” said Isaac Garcia Moreno, Executive Director of BW ESS. He noted the urgency of the situation, stating, “Recent events have underlined that there’s no time to waste in working towards these goals, and we look forward to applying a wealth of experience drawn from multiple global markets to the Spanish context.”
Based in the Basque Country and founded by executives with more than 25 years’ experience in the energy sector in Spain and worldwide, Ibersun has been developing renewable energy projects in Spain since its establishment in 2019 with a focus on solar and, more recently, BESS.
“Spain is one of the largest markets for BESS and our joint venture with a global leader like BW ESS is going to help us in our efforts to continue developing the country’s energy potential,” stated Javier Arkotxa and Jose Antonio Gutiérrez, the founders of Ibersun.
BW ESS has been busy energizing its storage projects, while agreeing to other deals similar to its new Spanish efforts, such as in Italy with ACL Energy. The company says it has more than 500 MWh of operating BESS projects, with over 2.5 GWh under construction and a development pipeline of about 9.5 GW.
