Sunotec buys 600 MWh colocated battery Latvia, Aura Power sells 100 MWh in Lithuania
Bulgarian energy storage and solar developer Sunotec has acquired the Lazas Solar Park utility-scale solar-plus-storage site, and Bristol-based Aura announced the sale of its ready-to-build Kaišiadorys battery energy storage system (BESS), also on Monday.
Sunotec’s Lazas site, which will have an investment value of up to €245 million ($288 million), will see a 600 MWh BESS installed alongside 400 MWp (DC) of tracker-mounted solar panels at the CÄ«rava rural territory in the Lazas parish of Latvia’s Dienvidkurzeme municipality.
The site’s new owner said construction would begin on the ready-to-build project – acquired from Danish Sun Energy ApS – this year, with commissioning due in March 2027.
The project will involve the installation of the 330 kV Padure substation to link the site with the Latvian high-voltage grid.
Sunotec executive chairman Kaloyan Velichkov said, “This acquisition marks a pivotal step in expanding our strategic footprint in Northern Europe and is a continuation of Sunotec’s investment in co-located renewable systems that will be critical on the way to achieving a future of clean energy, energy security, [grid] flexibility, and electrification.”
Zealand-based Danish Sun Energy said the Lazas site was the second renewables project it had brought to ready-to-build status in Latvia, having sold a 265 MWp solar park to state-owned utility Latvenergo in November.
The Kaišiadorys BESS, in central Lithuania, was the first sale from Aura’s 800 MW pipeline in the Baltic state, with UAB KarjerĹł linija acquiring the 50 MW/100 MWh site for an undisclosed fee with a view to construct and operate the facility.
The project was jointly developed by Aura and Kaunas-based electricity demand-response business Balancy Grid.
Aura said “This milestone sale of the Kaišiadorys project underscores Aura Power’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure across Europe,” said Peter Sermon, Head of Global Development at Aura Power. “As our first successful transaction in Lithuania, it validates our development strategy and highlights the critical role of BESS in supporting the Baltics’ energy transition and enhancing grid resilience, especially following the region’s synchronisation with Continental Europe.”
