Trina Storage partnership to deploy GWh-scale BESS in Baltics

As part of a long-term plan with Lithuanian company Stiemo, Trina Solar will deploy its Elementa 2 solution across three initial BESS projects with a combined storage capacity of 180 MWh.

Trina Storage, the energy storage arm of Trina Solar, is teaming up with Lithuanian engineering procurement contractor (EPC) Stiemo to deploy multi-GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Lithuania and Eastern Europe over the next two to three years.

The pair kickstarted their collaboration by signing agreements for a trio of Lithuanian BESS projects, located in Anyksciai, Skuodas and Jonava. Each BESS will deliver 30 MW/60 MWh, a combined total of 90 MW/180 MWh.

The three projects are expected to enter commercial operation by mid-2026, with deliveries scheduled to begin this December.

The BESS facilities will incorporate Trina Storage’s Elementa 2 integrated solution, including the battery system, MV Skid and PCS, as well as grid integration capabilities. The Elementa system will aim to provide balancing services for Lithuania’s grid to improve its overall energy resilience.

Lithuania is emblematic of the Balkans’ fast evolving renewable energy sector. In February of this year, its government launched an energy storage tender targeting 800 MWh of energy storage deliverable by 2028.

Commenting on his company’s partnership with Trina Storage, Stiemo CEO Giedrius Lynykas said the region’s electricity system requires reliability, experience, speed and accuracy – all of which, he added could be delivered by Stiemo and its partners.

“We hope that Trina Storage will become an indispensable partner in expanding the range of services in the field of energy storage for our customers,” Lynykas added.

For its part, Trina Storage has identified Lithuania as one of several key markets. “Eastern Europe is a fast-emerging market for utility-scale storage, and we are proud to enter this long-term partnership with Stiemo – one of the region’s most forward-thinking players,” said Gabriele Buccini, Head of Trina Storage Europe.

“These three anchor projects are just the beginning of a wider strategy to deploy GWh-scale flexible capacity across the Baltics and beyond… Together, Trina Storage and Stiemo are well-positioned to support Lithuania’s 2030 climate targets and help establish the Baltics as a hub for clean energy innovation,” Buccini added.
