Italy permits more than 1 GW of large-scale batteries in August

The Ministry has officially approved another 198 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS), according to its latest announcement.

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has published decrees for the construction of three new BESS with a total capacity of 198 MW in Campania and Basilicata.

The provisions were all dated Aug. 18 and are as follows:

Directorial Decree no. 55/56/2025 – Authorization for S2SE Cinque Srl to construct the 48 MW Bisaccia 3 BESS in the municipality of Bisaccia.

Directorial Decree no. 55/57/2025 – Authorization for BSD022023 Srl to construct the 30 MW Matera BESS in the municipality of Matera.

Ministerial Decree no. 55/58/2025 – Authorization for Energy Total Capital Bess Benevento 4 Srl to construct the 120 MW Malone BESS in the municipality of Ceprano.

MASE authorized more than 1 GW of new BESS capacity between Aug. 7 and Aug. 11, including the 160 MW Roverella project, in the municipality of Tuscania, and the 280 MW Melfi BESS 2 site in the municipality of Melfi.
