Tender award, new large-scale battery auction in India

Reliance Infra has landed a 390 MW solar and 780 MWh solar-plus-storage project from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC); the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is tendering an 80 MW/320 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kerala.

With Reliance Infrastructure Ltd announcing it has secured a tendered solar-plus-storage project with 780 MWh of battery energy storage capacity from the NHPC, the NTPC is now tendering for an 80 MW/320 MWh BESS in Kerala.

NTPC Green Energy Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC, has invited bids for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a grid-connected 80 MW/320 MWh BESS. The project will be developed across two Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) substations at Pothencode and Sreekantapuram.

The selected bidders will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning of the BESS system on a turnkey basis.

The total project is divided into two blocks. Block one is a 40 MW/160 MWh site at KSEB Pothencode substation and block two is a 40 MW/160 MWh facility at KSEB Sreekantapuram substation.

Bidders must bid for at least one block and are permitted to bid for both.

Reliance

Reliance Infrastructure Ltd has received a letter of award from state-owned power producer NHPC for a 390 MW solar power project integrated with battery energy storage.

To fulfil the contract, Reliance Infrastructure will develop 700 MWp of direct-current (DC) solar capacity, connected to the inter-state transmission system, along with a 780 MWh BESS. The generated power will be supplied to NHPC under contract.

The company secured the project at a competitive tariff of INR 3.13 ($0.04)/kWh in NHPC’s tender to procure 1.2 GW of solar power integrated with 600 MW/2.4 GWh of BESS. The tender attracted bids from 15 participants, with 14 qualifying for the electronic reverse auction. The tender was oversubscribed by nearly four times the desired project capacity, underscoring strong industry interest in dispatchable renewable energy solutions.

Reliance Power, a listed company within the Reliance Group, currently operates a renewable energy portfolio comprising approximately 2.5 GWp of solar and 2.5 GWh of BESS capacity. With the addition of the newly awarded project, the Reliance Group’s clean energy pipeline now exceeds 3 GWp of solar DC capacity and 3.5 GWh of BESS, positioning it as India’s largest player in the integrated solar-plus-storage segment.
