Sardinia appeals against approval for 72 MW battery
Sardinia says it will appeal to the Regional Administrative Court to try to overturn permission given by MASE for a 72 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the municipality of Mogorella, in Oristano province.
The island region had stated its intent to appeal against any authorization before MASE reached its decision, with the island’s Department of Environmental Protection citing a breach of regional law 20/2024, which defines suitable areas for such projects.
“Sardinia has a duty to defend its landscapes and the right of local communities to decide how to reconcile development and sustainability, “said Regional Councilor for Environmental Protection Rosanna Laconi. “We do not oppose the principle of energy transition but we demand that it be carried out in compliance with the rules, regional prerogatives, and environmental protection. For this reason, the region will act decisively in all necessary forums.”
MASE approval for the site constitutes “an act that undermines the powers of regional autonomy and risks compromising the coherence of the environmental and landscape protection policies that the council and the executive have outlined,” said Laconi.
Sardinia opposed MASE authorization for two agrivoltaic sites in March and, in late July, successfully persuaded the ministry to remove the hill of Sant’Ignazio, near Cagliari, from the locations included in a €750 million ($876 million)-plus tender to install solar projects in military areas.
