Lichtblick starts construction of 470 MWh storage system in German

Near Chemnitz, the Hamburg-based green energy provider wants to install its first large battery energy storage system (BESS), a 100 MW facility with up to 470 MWh of storage capacity. Commissioning is planned for 2027.

Lichtblick has begun construction of its first large BESS, in Röhrsdorf, Saxony.

Some 84 5.6 MWh Fluence battery storage containers will be installed in the city’s industrial park, near Chemnitz, Lichtblick today announced. The €100 million (USD 117 million), 100 MW site will have a capacity of up to 470.4 MWh and will be connected to the 110 kV high-voltage grid of distribution system operator Mitnetz Strom.

Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2027.

The development of the storage project to reach construction was carried out by Energisto. Lichtblick, a German subsidiary of Dutch energy company Eneco, founded the joint venture Giga Charge with the Munich-based company last year to advance the development of large battery storage systems.

“Thanks to the considerable four hour storage depth, the plant can react flexibly to the requirements of the electricity system of the future,” said Lichtblick COO Enno Wolf at the construction starting point.

The storage system will be marketed by Eneco Energy Trade, also owned by Eneco. According to the company, it is already the market leader in Belgium and the Netherlands in the marketing of energy flexibility and has about 950 MW of contracted battery capacity.

“For the energy transition, we need large amounts of flexible capacities. That’s why I’m incredibly proud that we’re building this battery storage system here in Röhrsdorf – the largest in Eneco’s portfolio,” said Eneco CEO Kees-Jan Rameau, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lichtblick.
