Grenergy boosts European standalone BESS pipeline to 31 GWh with 2.1 GWh win in Poland
Grenergy has secured capacity contracts for five standalone storage projects in Poland in the latest auction organized by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the country’s electricity system operator.
The five awarded standalone projects – Fred, George, Lucius, Hagrid, and Harry – have a combined power output of 534 MW, equivalent to 2.1 GWh of storage. They will serve as reserve capacity for the Polish grid during periods when the minimum system capacity cannot be guaranteed.
Grenergy captured over 11% of the total storage capacity in this auction, among around 685 MW of CM obligations awarded to BESS projects, with winners including R.Power, Nala Renewables, RWE and more.
Scheduled to start in January 2030, these services will be remunerated at a fixed price (indexed to CPI) of 465.02 PLN/kW/per year ($129.36/kW/yr) throughout the 17-year contract period. Overall, Grenergy has obtained a guaranteed minimum financial allocation exceeding €132 million.
Capacity revenue forms part of the revenue stack for each project. Additional income will come from energy trading and participation in other regulated markets, such as ancillary services, which may be structured through tolling agreements.
Furthermore, Grenergy recently received a grant of PLN 34 million (around $9.47 million) from the Polish government for four additional standalone projects. These projects have a cumulative storage capacity of 136 MWh and are expected to enter operation before 2028.
These grants are funded through the EU Modernisation Fund and aim to support the development of energy storage in Poland. The total PLN 4.15 billion ($1.15 billion) subsidy program will back 172 energy storage facilities scheduled for construction across Poland by the end of 2028. Collectively, these projects are expected to deliver approximately 3,900 MW of power and around 14,500 MWh of storage capacity.
Overall, Grenergy now has a standalone storage pipeline of 5 GWh in Poland.
With its latest project wins, Grenergy has expanded its European platform of standalone battery energy storage projects, Greenbox, to 31 GWh, positioning it as one of Europe’s leading storage developments.
Greenbox focuses on markets where Grenergy already has a presence, including: 5 GWh in Poland, 7 GWh in Romania, 3 GWh in Germany, 5.8 GWh in Italy, 6 GWh in Spain, and 4 GWh in the United Kingdom.
In Spain, the Oviedo standalone battery park, Greenbox’s flagship European project, will mark the first step in its Spanish and wider European development. The project will have a capacity of 600 MWh, with operations expected to begin in early 2027.
Overall, Grenergy’s total storage pipeline, including both standalone and hybrid projects, now totals 75 GWh.
