Engie, Google extend partnership in Germany to include batteries, pumped storage
French energy company Engie is deepening its collaboration with tech giant Google in Germany. Originally launched in 2021 to provide 24/7 decarbonized energy, the partnership is now being expanded to include battery storage solutions and new renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs), aimed at enhancing electricity system flexibility and grid stability.
Under the agreement, Engie will continue to act as Google’s decarbonized energy manager in Germany, leveraging its expertise in energy management and optimization. The goal is to deliver green electricity on an hourly basis from new onshore wind and solar projects, supplemented by storage capacity, while also integrating volumes from Google’s existing long-term PPAs with third-party suppliers.
To offset the intermittency of renewable generation, the plan incorporates battery energy storage systems (BESS) and pumped-storage hydroelectric plants in Germany. This combination is expected to provide a more precise balance between supply and demand, enabling Google’s German operations to achieve approximately 85% decarbonized energy by 2026.
The announcement comes amid Google’s significant investments in Germany, with the company planning around €5.5 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure and office facilities between 2026 and 2029.
