Argentina launches tender for 700 MW of battery storage outside Greater Buenos Aires

Argentina’s Energy Secretariat has launched a national and international tender process to incorporate battery energy storage system (BESS) plants at critical nodes across the country, with an estimated investment of $700 million. The initiative will be administered by the Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico (CAMMESA), which manages the country’s wholesale electricity market.

Argentina’s Secretariat of Energy, under the Ministry of Economy, has launched an open call for proposals to install new battery energy storage systems (BESS) at strategic nodes across the regions of Northwest (NOA), Northeast (NEA), Central, Litoral, Cuyo and the province of Buenos Aires – excluding the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). The objective is to strengthen the reliability of the Argentine Interconnected System and reduce outages, particularly during peak demand.

This stage targets 700 MW of capacity, with an estimated investment of $700 million. The initiative is designed to add operational backup and enhance the system’s responsiveness during periods of high demand.

Next-generation battery storage systems can inject or absorb electricity within seconds, increasing dispatch flexibility and creating operational reserves. This capability helps lower the risk of blackouts and improve service quality in regions facing structural constraints or rapid demand growth. The tender process will be administered by the Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico (CAMMESA), which manages the wholesale electricity market.

The measure builds on the AlmaGBA programme, the country’s first large-scale energy storage initiative, focused on critical nodes within the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. AlmaGBA awarded 713 MW – more than 40% above its initial target – with an estimated investment exceeding $540 million. Fifteen companies submitted 27 projects totalling 1,347 MW, and construction is currently underway.

According to the Energy Secretariat, the new tender forms part of a plan launched in 2024 to ease constraints in the electricity system, reduce supply interruptions and rebuild infrastructure after two decades of underinvestment amid rising demand.
