Eco Stor has reached financial close on a 300 MW/718 MWh battery project in Förderstedt, Germany, making it the largest BESS project to be realized and financed in Germany to date, with debt provided by Banco Santander and NORD/LB.

The Förderstedt project in the state of Saxony-Anhalt is approximately three times the capacity of Eco Stor’s existing Bollingstedt facility, currently Germany’s largest operational battery storage system. Commissioning is targeted for 2027. Eco Stor is backed by renewable energy developer X-Elio and investment firm Nature Infrastructure Capital.

The project is backed by a long-term flexibility tolling agreement with Next Kraftwerke, one of Europe’s largest virtual power plant operators.

Eco Stor Chief Financial Officer Jörn Rohland said the financing was achieved without public subsidies, describing it as evidence of the market’s growing ability to finance essential storage infrastructure through private investment and commercial debt. He added that large-scale projects such as Förderstedt provide critical infrastructure to support grid stability, renewable integration, and security of supply.

Clifford Chance advised the lenders. Hogan Lovells advised Eco Stor.

Eco Stor announced plans for the Förderstedt facility in 2024. The company’s existing Bollingstedt project, also developed without public subsidies, established ECO STOR as Germany’s leading independent battery storage developer before Förderstedt surpassed it.
