European Energy commissions 25 MW/65 MWh BESS in Lithuania
Danish developer European Energy has brought its first Baltic states battery storage project online, integrating a 25 MW/65 MWh system with an existing solar park in Lithuania ahead of full commercial operation before the end of June.
The project is the second hybrid renewable energy facility in Lithuania to combine large-scale solar generation with battery storage, according to the company, integrated with European Energy’s 78.5 MW solar park at the same site. The Anykščiai solar park, one of the largest in the Baltic region, was the first solar facility in Lithuania to participate in the system services market, European Energy said, adding that the battery integration is expected to increase grid flexibility and support balancing services.
“We worked closely with Lithuania’s electricity transmission system operator, Litgrid, throughout the implementation of this project,” said Tadeušas Konkovskis, vice president and head of the Baltic region at European Energy. “As one of the first projects of its kind in the country, it was important to complete all testing procedures and ensure a smooth connection process.”
Thorvald Spanggaard, executive vice president and head of project development, said hybrid solutions are becoming increasingly important as renewable capacity in Lithuania grows.
“Energy storage can help manage variations in generation and support stable operation of the electricity system,” he said. “Lithuania remains an important market for our renewable energy activities.”
European Energy operates approximately 400 MW of renewable energy capacity in Lithuania and is developing a further pipeline of around 800 MW across solar, wind, and storage. A second Lithuanian BESS project – 12 MW/50 MWh in Telšiai – is expected to connect to the grid in December 2026.
Lithuania has moved aggressively to build domestic storage capacity since disconnecting from the Russian grid in February 2025 and synchronizing with the European network. The government has approved support for up to 1.7 GW/4 GWh of new storage capacity, expanding an initial €102 million ($118.4 million) tender that drew interest well beyond its original 800 MWh energy storage target.
