Engie begins construction of 140.8 MW solar-plus-storage project in Peru

Engie Energía Perú has begun construction of the Hanaqpampa solar project, a 140.8 MW solar plant with a 15 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Moquegua region of southern Peru.

The project represents an investment of more than $127 million and is expected to enter commercial operation in the first quarter of 2028, according to the company.

Hanaqpampa will include more than 200,000 solar modules, a 220/33 kV substation, and a 15.5 km, 220 kV transmission line to connect the facility to Peru’s electricity grid.

Engie said construction is expected to create more than 400 jobs. Over its operating lifetime, the project is forecast to avoid more than 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The company already operates the Intipampa solar plant and its expansion in Moquegua, giving it a total of 91.7 MW of installed solar capacity in the region.

The project was originally proposed with 300 MW of capacity. However, Peru’s authorities approved a modification to the project’s definitive concession in February, reducing its capacity to 140 MWac.
