Kearsarge Energy commissions battery storage, PV portfolio across US Northeast

Kearsarge Energy has brought 88 MW of distributed solar and battery storage projects online across the northeastern United States and plans to commission more than 160 MW of additional capacity by the end of 2026.

Boston-based independent power producer (IPP) Kearsarge Energy has finalized a portfolio of standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS), ground-mounted solar, and co-located solar-plus-storage projects.

The 2025 deployment spans multiple northeastern states including Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, Maryland, and New Hampshire. The portfolio features public-private partnerships alongside private developments on landfills, carports, rooftops, and brownfield sites.

As a full-scope asset manager, Kearsarge owns and operates its entire energy portfolio, occasionally purchasing the underlying land. The company is expanding its geographic footprint nationally, with 2026 pipeline commissions slated for Minnesota, Delaware, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, alongside its core northeastern markets.

Several projects anchor the company’s recent 2025 deployment:

  • Orleans, Vermont: This dual-asset deployment combines a 20 MWh standalone BESS to reduce local peak demand for the host municipal light department, alongside a 7.5 MW solar array delivering over 8.7 million kWh and renewable energy credits (RECs) annually to the Vermont Public Power Supply Authority.
  • St. Johnsville, New York: Built on land purchased by the developer, this 6.9 MW ground-mounted project features a single-axis tracker system. Expected to generate over 10.5 million kWh annually, the array operates under New York State’s “Solar for All” program to deliver clean energy savings to low-income households.
  • North Reading, Massachusetts: A 22.5 MWh standalone BESS designed to help the Reading Municipal Light Department shave local peak load during grid constraint events, reducing regional ISO New England transmission peaks.
  • Sterling, Massachusetts: A co-located solar-plus-storage project developed for the Sterling Municipal Light Department. A ground-mounted solar array on private land generates over 2.2 million kWh annually, paired with a 20 MWh BESS to offset peak energy demand and lower wholesale capacity charges.
  • Southampton, New York: The North Sea Solar array features a specialized ballasted racking system installed atop a capped landfill. The system generates more than 8.5 million kWh annually, funneling power to the Long Island Electrical grid and providing energy bill credits to the town and low-to-moderate-income community subscribers.

Kearsarge currently manages a $900 million, 400 MW national project pipeline, with a reported track record of 300 MW and $600 million in solar and storage assets developed since 2011.
