Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy meets CATL and Huawei to discuss energy storage
During an official visit to China, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, held a series of meetings with Chinese companies to discuss energy storage and outline the upcoming reserve capacity auction, which will include battery systems and is scheduled for April 2026.
On Friday, January 23, the minister met with representatives from Huawei and visited the company’s research and development (R&D) Center in Shanghai. The center focuses on strategic research areas such as semiconductors, wireless networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital solutions for the electricity sector and the energy transition.
Earlier, on Wednesday, January 21, Silveira met with executives from the CATL group. He presented the general guidelines for the battery auction in April 2026, with supply set to begin in August 2028. The auction will focus exclusively on new storage systems, with reserve power contracts lasting ten years and based on power availability measured in megawatts (MW).
On Monday, January 19, the minister visited the SANY Group to discuss investments in an industrial hub in Brazil focused on heavy construction, mining, oil, gas, energy, and electrical energy storage. He also met with representatives from DiDi Global, which controls the DiDi platform in Brazil, to explore investments in the country’s electromobility sector.
