Revera Energy reaches financial close on 400 MWh UK BESS

Carlyle-backed developer reaches financial close on the first of three UK battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in its development pipeline. Windyhill BESS in Bearsden, near Glasgow is close to one of the major bottlenecks on Great Britain’s grid.

Revera Energy has announced construction will commence immediately on its 200 MW/400 MWh Windyhill BESS project near Glasgow, UK, after reaching financial close on the project.

Windyhill BESS is the developer’s first UK BESS to achieve financial close. Revera has an additional 800 MW/1,600 MWh of BESS projects with approved planning consents, land rights and grid access in the United Kingdom, according to the developer, as well as 15-year capacity contract. It anticipates construction across all three projects will commence over the next 12 months.

Financial close was achieved at Windyhill BESS via non-recourse senior debt financing – a secured loan – provided by Santander CIB. White & Case served as borrower’s council.

Revera has also entered a 10-year revenue floor deal with Danske Commodities covering 100% of project capacity. The developer said Dankse Commodities will provide trading and optimization services, with Revera overseeing construction management and long-term asset management.

Energy storage for the project will be provided by GE Vernova who will also provide a long-term service agreement, while G2 Mitie has been contracted as the balance of plant and maintenance provider. Revera expects Windyhill BESS to enter commercial operations in the first quarter of 2028.

When the energy storage system does come online, its capacity will serve one of the more congested areas of Great Britain’s energy grid. The Windyhill BESS is located near abundant wind generating capacity north of the B6 boundary – a 400 kV electricity transmission bottleneck between Scotland and England.

Daniel Kim, CEO of Revera Energy, said achieving financial close for Windyhill was a significant achievement, “and marks another crucial step in our mission to build a high-quality independent power platform in the UK and Australia and accelerate the energy transition.”

Founded in May 2025 by global investment management firm Carlyle, Revera has multiple BESS projects in development in the United Kingdom and Australia. The developer expects the 150MW/300MWh stage 1 segment of its Bungama BESS to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2026. Revera’s BESS progress in the United Kingdom and Australia follows the recent announcement of an expanded $150 million credit facility with Japanese investment bank Nomura.
