Combining liquid-based direct air capture with compressed air energy storage
Scientists in China have simulated a system that combines liquid-based direct air capture with diabatic compressed air energy storage, for the benefit of both processes. Exploring its economic feasibility, they found the system could achieve a levelized cost of energy of $0.53/kWh and a levelized cost of CO2 captured from air of $259/tCO2.
Dutch start-up develops sodium-ion battery tech for solar colocation
Founded by former Tesla leaders, Amsterdam-based Moonwatt is taking a novel approach to sodium-ion battery technology, optimizing it for colocation with solar power plants. The company has raised $8.3 million in seed funding to accelerate its growth, with plans for a pilot installation in Europe next year and commericial deployments by 2027.
Czech company to provide cathode material to U.S. sodium-ion maker Natron Energy
Prussian blue material manufactured by Draslovka will become part of Natron’s sodium-ion battery supply chain. The Czech company plans to build new facilities on both sides of the Atlantics to supply the U.S. company's production.

New solid state zinc battery with superb cycle performance
Researchers in Australia have developed a new class of solid electrolytes for rechargeable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries, which has allowed for extended lifespan and high-efficiency. Symmetric cells employing this electrolyte have demonstrated excellent cycle performance, maintaining stability for approximately 5,000 hours at room temperature, while all-solid-state ZnI2 batteries exhibit over 7,000 cycles with a capacity retention exceeding 72.2%.

Swedish sodium-ion battery specialist Altris has partnered with Stora Enso, Finish-Swedish cellulose and paper maker, to drive the adaptation of the corporation’s hard carbon solution Lignode as an anode material in its sodium-ion battery cells.

US commercial real estate to host VPP-connected flywheels and batteries
US-based technology provider Torus has agreed to supply nearly 26 MWh of energy storage for Gardner Group's commercial real estate portfolio. The project will integrate battery and flywheel energy storage systems (BESS, FESS) with Torus' proprietary energy management platform.

Researchers in South Korea have successfully demonstrated the use of free ambient air as a fuel leveraging a sodium-based solid electrolyte to tackle the carbonate issue that has been holding back the rollout of metal-air batteries. Their sodium-air battery cell has demonstrated high efficiency, incresed energy density, and a broad voltage range.
Texas to host 300 MW of geomechanical energy storage projects
Quidnet Energy, a provider of geomechanical energy storage (GES) technology, has joined hands with distributed energy resources developer Hunt Energy Network to deliver 300 MW of storage projects in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid operating region.
