China announces procurement of sodium-ion batteries with price ceiling at $150/kWh

UK developers seek consent for 36 GWh Fearna Pumped Hydro project
SSE and Gilkes Energy join forces to propose a 20-hour pumped storage facility in the Scottish Highlands. The site would make use of existing infrastructure for a neighboring hydro generation plant. UK’s Gresham House secures consent for 456 MW BESS in Scotland
ESS News understands initial design is for a two-hour BESS in Gretna, however the site is large enough to accommodate an eight- to 10- hour project with potential durations of 3.6 GWh to 4.6 GW. The project is not currently part of the Gresham House Energy Storage Fund (GRID).

China scraps energy storage mandate for renewable energy plants
In a major policy shift towards electricity market liberalization, China has introduced contract for difference (CfD) auctions for renewable energy plants and removed the energy storage mandate, which has driven up to 75% of the nation's demand to date. S&P Global expects the move to reverberate throughout the global battery energy storage supply chain, further driving down prices that are already at historically low levels.

Dutch start-up develops sodium-ion battery tech for solar colocation
Founded by former Tesla leaders, Amsterdam-based Moonwatt is taking a novel approach to sodium-ion battery technology, optimizing it for colocation with solar power plants. The company has raised $8.3 million in seed funding to accelerate its growth, with plans for a pilot installation in Europe next year and commericial deployments by 2027.
