Germany sets energy storage capacity record in 2025 despite fewer new systems More than 2.2 million energy storage systems have now been installed in Germany, with around 526,000 new systems added in 2025 – around one quarter of the total fleet. Small-scale energy storage continues to dominate new additions, but the number of projects in the planning phase suggests large-scale storage could be set for significant growth.

Uniper to recommission 160 MW pumped storage plant in Germany The Happurg pumped storage plant was shut down in 2011 for safety reasons after the base of the upper reservoir was damaged. Uniper has carried out feasibility studies on the site, with a view to reconnecting it to the grid in 2028. The facility can store approximately 850 MWh of electricity in the form of pumped water.
