Chile’s storage fleet to top 1 GW in 2024
The Citizen Open Energy Report No. 3, published by Chilean energy body the Comisión Nacional de Energía (CNE), estimates the nation will have 1,113 MW of energy storage capacity by the end of 2024, with a storage duration of around 3.88 hours.
The report considers energy storage data from July and August 2024.
By July 2024, the report indicated, Chile’s National Electric System had 738 MW of energy storage capacity which had either been installed or was being put into service. Those sites had an average 4.02 hours of storage duration.
The document estimates Chile will have 2,213 MW of storage during 2025, with an average duration of 4.25 hours and indicates capacity could rise to 2,248 MW during 2026, again with an average 4.25-hour duration.
The Citizen Open Energy Report notes 52% of projects to date have a power rating of at least 50 MW.
Marco Mancilla Ayancán, executive secretary of the CNE, states in the report, “In the first half of 2024, there are 11 projects under construction that are authorized by the Comisión Nacional de Energía, for a total of a net capacity greater than 1,000 MW, with a storage capacity exceeding 4,000 MWh.
“The CNE’s power generation planning scenarios, based on the Ministry of Energy’s Long-Term Strategic Planning, project that by 2027 between 1,200 and 2,550 additional MW will be needed in energy storage systems, which would be located in the northern part of the National Electric System,” he says.
