Transelec, Clou Electronics, Copec to build 420 MWh battery storage project in Chile
Transelec, Chile’s largest electricity transmission company, has announced the purchase of the battery storage and conversion equipment from Chinese company Clou Electronics for a large-scale project it is developing with Chilean petroleum company Copec at the Granja Solar photovoltaic park.
In a statement, Clou said that it will provide more than 130 20-foot (6 m) energy storage modules, each containing thousands of battery cells. The final battery system will have nominal injection power of 105 MW and a storage capacity of 420 MWh.
Clou said the equipment “is a liquid-cooled storage system which stands out for having a high level of security and energy density.”
Reports indicate that the first shipment of the equipment is scheduled for July 2025 and that the storage system will be operational in early 2026.
Transelec New Technologies Manager Alex Alegría said, “We will work with Clou to develop the engineering associated with the equipment and other supplies, such as systems to properly connect to the grid, auxiliary systems, and control systems, among others.”
In July 2024, Transelec announced an agreement to develop the energy storage system at the 123 MWp-generation capacity Granja Solar photovoltaic park, in the commune of Pozo Almonte in the Tarapacá region.
In April 2024, Copec acquired the Granja Solar project in the context of the bankruptcy liquidation procedure of the María Elena Solar SA Economic Unit, along with an associated electrical substation and a 23.4 km electrical transmission line that connects the solar plant to Chile’s National Electric System.
