Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in line for 10 GW of pumped hydro
A joint venture between National Thermal Power Company subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and the state-owned New and Renewable Energy Development Corp. of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) will develop INR 1.87 trillion ($22.1 billion) worth of renewables and storage projects in Andhra Pradesh.
With the Indian state aiming for 25 GWh of battery energy storage and 22 GW of pumped hydro storage capacity as part of its 2024 Integrated Clean Energy Policy, the NGEL-NREDCAP joint venture wants to develop 10 GW of pumped hydro, 25 GW of solar, wind, and “hybrid” clean energy projects, and 500,000 metric tons-per-year of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Andhra Pradesh’s clean energy policy aims for more than 160 GW of renewable energy capacity by attracting INR 10 trillion of investment with 78.5 GW of solar capacity, 35 GW of wind, 1.5 million metric tons per year of green hydrogen also on the list of targets.
The policy also aims to attract 5 GWh of annual battery manufacturing capacity, 20 GW of polysilicon-to-solart-module production lines, and 3 GW of wind turbine and electrolyzer production capacity as well as 1.5 megaliters and 10,000 tons of daily ethanol and biomethane production capacity, respectively.
