Sungrow to retrofit 1.5 GWh of battery storage at Citicore’s solar plant in the Philippines

The deal is touted as the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) supply agreement in Southeast Asia to date.

Chinese inverter and energy storage heavyweight Sungrow has recorded yet another gigawatt-scale BESS order in what is described as Southeast Asia’s biggest storage suplly deal to date.

Last week, Sungrow announced the signing of a landmark agreement with Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) for 1.5 GWh of its PowerTitan2.0 energy storage system. CREC plans to integrate the batteries into its operating 302 MWp solar power project, enhancing its efficiency and sustainability.

Specifically, the addition of BESS will address grid congestion relief, with the power limitation of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) grid connection point preventing the PV station from outputing at full capacity during peak periods. It will also ensure smoother energy output and thereby support the stability of the power grid.

Under the agreement, Sungrow will also provide engineering and construction design services to ensure seamless integration with CREC’s solar facility.

The project parners have also agreed on an unprecedented delivery timeline, including the lead time of only two months from the agreement signing to the shipment of the first batch, which compares to the average of six month for delivery to overseas projects.

Sungrow said that it is possible to meet its clients’ needs since its PowerTitan 2.0 system, featuring an AC-DC integrated design, undergoes pre-installation and pre-commissioning for immediate grid connection on-site.

“The immediate development of battery energy storage systems is a necessary step to fulfill the maximum potential of our renewable energy facilities. With these installed together with our solar facilities, we will be able to provide needed power at any point of day or night,” said CREC President and CEO Oliver Tan.

Earlier this year,  Sungrow landed a massive 7.8 GWh deal with Saudi Arabia’s investment group Algihaz Holding to deliver its PowerTitan technology across three projects. This deal was the world’s biggest at the time and only a couple of days later overshadowed by Tesla’s nearly two times bigger order from US developer Intersect Power.

Last month, Sungrow landed a 4.4 GWh supply deal with UK-based Fidra Energy , following a 1.4 GWh order from Penso Power and BW ESS also in the UK. In August, the Chinese supplier agreed to deliver 1 GWh of battery storage for Spearmint’s Texas projects.
