India’s Reliance secures 10 GWh battery cell production capacity under national incentive scheme

The second round of bidding for the INR 181 billion ($2.09 billion) advanced-chemistry cell (ACC) portion of India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) program ensured 40 GWh of annual production lines have now been awarded.

India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries has allocated 10 GWh of annual battery cell manufacturing capacity to the Reliance New Energy Battery Ltd arm of energy-to-entertainment conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd.

The production capacity, awarded after a tender, is eligible for funding from India’s INR 181 billion PLI scheme for the manufacture of ACCs.

The ACC section of the PLI scheme, approved by the Indian cabinet in May 2021, aims to establish 50 GWh of Indian cell manufacturing capacity. The first round of bidding for factory projects, in March 2022, saw three companies secure 30 GWh of annual production capacity. Program agreements for those fabs were signed in July 2022.

The Union Budget for the fiscal year due to start on April 1 introduced several measures aimed at accelerating domestic battery manufacture and supporting e-mobility growth. The budget exempted 35 new electric-vehicle-battery-related capital goods from basic customs duty in a move aimed to boost the production of lithium-ion batteries in India.
