Greenvolt Power, a subsidiary of Portugal’s Greenvolt Group, signed an agreement on March 3 with China’s BYD Energy Storage to develop two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland with a cumulative power output of 400 MW and a storage capacity of 1.6GWh.

The contract covers the design and operation of two storage projects, each with a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh. The facilities will be located in Turośń Kościelna and Nowa Wieś Ełcka, connecting to Poland’s 110kV and 220kV transmission networks, respectively. Both projects have secured contracts in Poland’s capacity market.

“This is the largest contract we have signed in Europe to date,” said João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group. “Our partnership with BYD Energy Storage underscores our commitment to advancing storage solutions, which are crucial for maximizing the integration of renewable energy.”

The first phase of the contract, which includes substation infrastructure construction, is already underway. Deliveries are set to begin in Q4 2025, with full installation expected by Q1 2026.

BYD is one of the world’s leading BESS suppliers. According to SNE Research, BYD shipped 28.4 GWh of BESS in 2023, securing a 15% global market share and ranking second worldwide. However, shipments declined slightly to 27 GWh in 2024, dropping its market share to 9% and its ranking to third. In early 2025, BYD signed a major 12.5 GWh storage deal with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).

Poland’s energy storage market is emerging as one of Europe’s most attractive in 2025, driven by supportive policies. According to a Clean Horizon report, the opening of Poland’s ancillary services market in December 2024 resulted in annualized revenues for centralized storage ranging from €208,000/MW to €305,000/MW.

The market response has been strong. Poland’s capacity market auction in January 2025 saw total awarded storage capacity reach 2.5 GW, a 47% increase from 1.7 GW in 2024. Alexandra Radwanska, Poland country manager at German aggregator Next Kraftwerke, noted that Poland’s power market is now larger than those of Belgium and the Netherlands combined.
