Chilean liquefied natural gas company Abastible has signed a long-term PPA to buy electricity from a solar-plus-storage project in Tarapacá which is being developed by Spanish renewables business Zelestra.

The 220 MW (DC) solar and 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project, which is under construction, will provide nighttime power to Abastible, which itself supplies energy, chiefly to small and medium-sized businesses.

Zelestra said the site will supply around 600 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power 200,000 Chilean households.

The Spanish developer recently submitted, for environmental permitting, plans for its Monterrico Solar Photovoltaic Park, which will feature a 200 MW/1.2 GWh BESS alongside 248.73 MWp of solar generation capacity. That planned, $360 million site would be in Chile’s Ñuble region.
