German steelmaker Salzgitter tenders 150 MW solar, on-site battery

German steelmaker Salzgitter Group is tendering for solar generation capacity and on-site batteries at its Salzgitter site as the “next step towards green steel production.”
The manufacturer, which will offer to sign a long-term PPA for the resulting clean energy, said it has already signed “extensive” PPAs as part of the initial phase of production of the company’s “Salcos” green steel brand.
Salzgitter plans to eventually use hydrogen to power its green steel production, reducing the alloy’s carbon footprint by around 95%. The 150 MW of solar to be tendered – with interested parties able to register their proposals until June 22 – is to secure the final volume of clean electricity needed to complete the steelmaker’s initial green steel plans.
A separate tender, also by subsidiary SZFG, seeks “a partner who will assume responsibility for the investment, construction, and operation of a battery [energy] storage system on the steelworks site.”
That tender, also open until June 22, envisages SZFG and the successful battery developer jointly using the facility.
The first phase of Salzgitter’s green steel plan is set to begin operation in 2026-27.
