1.8 GWh battery storage project planned for Germany

One of Germany’s largest battery energy storage projects is being planned for the Münsterland region, in the North Rhine-Westphalia area close to the Dutch border.
The Waltrop battery park will have a power output of 900 MW and a storage capacity of 1,800 MWh, according to the trio of companies involved in its planning. These are German companies, asset manager Luxcara and utility Trianel, together with Swiss company BKW.
Luxcara has now acquired a part of the project, specifically 520 MW /1,040 MWh. It is to be built on an unused site, which was planned for the construction of a coal-fired power plant in previous years. Grid connection capacities are already secured for the battery project. There is also a tolling agreement in place for the project. Luxcara did not provide further details and it did not say how high its investment was.
The asset manager’s investment includes the development, construction and operation of the battery energy storage system (BESS). Construction is planned to begin in 2026. The authorities are still currently reviewing the project.
BKW will build and operate a 300 MW/600 MWh portion of the Waltrop Battery Park. The investment costs amounted to more than €200 million. The BESS is located near a substation. Construction is planned to begin in 2026, with commissioning scheduled for the year 2028.
