European PV association SolarPower Europe has launched its European Battery Storage Platform to advance the business model and regulatory framework for battery energy storage across the European Union.

The trade body wants the deployment of at least “ten times more battery storage by 2030,” and has said, “Investing in storage and flexibility is the way to structurally decouple our economy from imported fossil fuels, making energy more affordable, less volatile, and more secure.”

The new platform will represent battery industry interests at a European Union level. That means collaborating with policymakers and providing legislative, commercial, and investment frameworks for the manufacturing and deployment of battery storage, according to SolarPower Europe.

The association said the new initiative builds on the success of its annual storage-focused report, the “European Market Outlook for Battery Storage.”

Juhi Dion Sud has been appointed director of the European Battery Storage Platform. A commercial lawyer in Brussels for almost two decades, Dion Sud specializes in European union and international trade, World Trade Organization, and EU regulatory and customs law.

She said, “The EU currently has just over 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS). To stay on track toward the 2030 renewable energy targets, this figure must increase to between 500 GWh and 780 GWh. Our main demand: a tenfold increase in battery storage within five years.”
