Matrix Renewables plans 400 MWh battery storage in two plants in northern Spain
Matrix Renewables, the Madrid-based IPP backed by TPG Rise, has submitted environmental impact and administrative permits for two stand-alone lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS), Visenta and Perdiguero.
Each would have 100 MW connection capacity in Huesca province, covering the municipalities of Sesué, Benasque and Sahún, in the Pyrenees.
Each facility offers approximately 400 MWh of storage, designed for four hours of full-power discharge. The combined usable storage across both sites is 407.264 MWh.
The installations consist of 104 Tesla Megapack 2 XL containers arranged into 52 double blocks, paired with 26 transformers. Inverters deliver 0.979 MW AC per unit. Power is transmitted via a 30 kV underground medium-voltage network using RHZ1-OL 18/30 kV conductors.
Supporting infrastructure includes a Pirineo 220/30 kV step-up substation with two transformers rated at 115/220 MVA and 180/185 MVA. Each plant’s construction budget is approximately €62 million.
Beyond these projects Matrix Renewables manages a broad portfolio across geographies and technologies, and as of 2024, the company had 15.5 GW in renewables, energy storage, and green hydrogen across Europe, Latin America, and North America. It has 52 projects in Chile for 412 MW.
More recently, Matrix Renewables also pitched a 1 GW/2 GWh BESS in Scotland.
