Ingeteam to hybridize 200 MWh battery storage at four Iberdrola solar sites

The grid forming battery energy storage systems (BESS) will add 100 MW/200 MWh of capacity to the Spanish grid.

Basque power electronics specialist Ingeteam says it will add BESS to Iberdrola’s photovoltaic plants in Revilla Vallejera, in Burgos; Andévalo, in Huelva; and at the Almaraz I and II projects in Extremadura. Iberdrola last year announced its plans for the locations to become hybrid sites.

Ingeteam said it will supply and commission medium-voltage power electronics, control, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) solutions for the solar sites, with the storage to begin operating in the final quarter.

Each project will have five medium-voltage stations to manage 25 MW/50 MWh and the BESS will have a total scale of 100 MW/200 MWh. Each BESS will also have a Hybrid Power Plant Controller capable of coordinating with the photovoltaic plant to combine and limit the power delivered at the connection point.

Energy storage systems have recently been recognized as Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) in under the Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen, and Storage (ERHA) division and received more than €26 million in funding from the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

Ingeteam and Iberdrola have already collaborated on other renewable energy hybridization projects involving storage, such as the first battery system installed at an operating wind farm in Spain, as well as pilot projects in Puertollano and at the Campo Arañuelo III site.

Iberdrola has also used Ingeteam technology to commission pumped hydro energy storage sites at Santiago-Sil-Xares, in Ourense, and Valdecañas, in Cáceres, over the last year. Valdecañas is considered one of the largest energy storage batteries in Spain.
