A new utility-scale liquid-cooled battery energy storage system (BESS), the PotisBank-L6.25-AC, has been introduced to the market by PotisEdge, offering a nominal capacity of 6.25 MWh per cabinet.

The PotisBank-L6.25-AC is an all-in-one system in a standard container, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, with an approximate weight of 48 tonnes.

Two versions are available, with the PotisBank-L6.25-AC-4h as a four-hour duration option featuring lower peak output at 1.72 MW (listed as 215kW multiplied by eight units), and the PotisBank-L6.25-AC-2h with a higher power output of 3.44 MW (listed as 430 kW multiplied by eight units). The system is said to have a round-trip efficiency of ≥94% and a current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 3%.

With a relatively high energy density (new products are changing the definition of “high” given the BYD 14.5 MWh DC and Tesla Megablock), the product allows for both side-by-side and back-to-back installation layouts which can increase energy density by 30% and reduce the required land area by 36%.

The unit is compatible with both string and central Power Conversion Systems (PCS) and supports multi-brand PCS integration.

In terms of cooling, the PotisBank-L6.25-AC is said to incorporate a liquid cooling system for both the battery pack and the PCS, which helps to reduce auxiliary power consumption. The design also features a ten-year fluid replacement-free cycle for the cooling system, aiming to control long-term operational expenses. The unit is designed to operate in a temperature range of -30°C to +55°C and at altitudes up to 2000m. The enclosure has an IP55 degree of protection, with C4 / C5 anti-corrosion grades available as an option. The operational noise level is rated at ≤75 dB at one metre.

In terms of safety and fire suppression, PotisEdge states that the unit features multi-stage active fire detection and suppression, compliant with NFPA 855. Standard fire suppression features include smoke and heat detectors, a Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP), sprinklers, and a flammable gas detector. In addition, optional features are an aerosol fire-extinguishing system and an NFPA 68-compliant vent panel.

The system is compliant with a range of standards, including UL9540A, UL1973, UL9540, NFPA855, and IEC62619. Environmentally, the product is noted as being RoHS and REACH compliant, cobalt-free, and uses a recyclable refrigerant.
